How to Properly Wash Basketball Uniforms

Many families have a basketball player somewhere in the house. While basketball is not as “dirty” a game as, say, football, players often come home with uniforms that are soiled or stained. Because uniforms can be expensive, most moms want to keep them clean and serviceable for as long as possible. This means that they have to wash them in such a way so as not to damage them.

One thing to keep in mind is that many basketball uniforms will come with their own set of washing and cleaning instructions. It is very important to follow these instructions as the manufacturer of the uniform has done testing on the colors and materials and this information is perhaps the best way to get the best advice on how to clean the uniform.

For those uniforms that do not have any special instructions, a good way to clean them follows:

  • If the uniform has been stained, use a stain remover or pre-soak liquid to help remove the stain. Try to use the stain remover that will work on the particular type of stain you have. For instance, if you need to get blood stains out of the uniform, use a remover that will handle that type of stain.
  • Most basketball uniforms are best washed in cold water, using laundry detergent that works in cold water. Using cold water will prevent the uniform from shrinking and it will also do less damage on the colors than hot water can do. Hot water, over time, can fade most colors and once they are faded they do not come back.
  • After washing, let the uniform drip dry on a hanger rather than putting it into a dryer. Again, this is the best way to preserve the colors and to avoid any shrinkage.
